Reflections: Observing Destiny

Nerd kids unite, Destiny has been released. I have nothing that can play it, but one of my friends is very excited about it. I’ve decided to watch him and observe the game as he learns how to play for my first journals.

Now, I’m just going to throw out now that I am NOT a first person kind of player. I really don’t like it. I like character design too much to not see my character. However, I have to admit that the first person for this game is really nice and really draws you into the world and your environment. The voice acting is primo. The script is really well written. Story-wise, things don’t seem to be pushed down your throat. They expect the player to be able to figure things out on their own without walls of text being shoved down their throat. The game itself lets you tell your own story. Yes, it gives you some direction but it allows you to go ahead and do what you want.

Everything in the game really ties into the world nicely, which as a worldbuilder I really like. All the items like guns and clothing are named appropriately for the world and look like they belong. And the UI… wow. it’s so super sleek. It tells you everything you need to know while not getting in the way of the immersion.

You can even team up with other players to overcome challenges without having to form a party! I think this was a really nice move immersion-wise because if you were actually in this world fighting things you wouldn’t have to form a group officially… you could just fight alongside other people. In many MMORPGs there’s a distinction as to who gets loot if multiple people fight a monster. However, in Destiny everything is very seamless and the world and the roleplaying really shine.

I’m quite impressed. Given the chance I may try the game myself, even though I’m not much of a shooter player. The world is really interesting, the character design and environment are both beautiful, and the roleplaying seems to be very easy to get into without breaking immersion all the time.
