Reflections: Dragon Age: Origins (First Impressions)

So I live in a two person apartment, and next door are four of our friends. It started out as two of us playing it… and now it’s five. It’s taking me a while to get into it since I have very little time nowadays, but seeing all of my friends play it always helps. We all decided on different origins and classes, but our stories have come together.

I really enjoy the roleplaying aspect of the game. I started as a dwarf noble, and the political intrigue really pulled me in. My eldest was always insanely rude to me, and I just wanted to prove him wrong. When my younger brother revealed that the other was plotting to kill me, I believed him but definitely wanted proof. In the end, although it seemed so obvious that it was my eldest brother really plotting to kill me and I was ready to defend myself… it was all a set up from the younger. I was so upset! I had taken on the persona of my character and thought that my younger brother was on my side and I trusted him. But that was my mistake.

I personally feel that the combat is a little jarring and breaks the immersion. I have to switch between characters and open screens for potions and zoom out into tactical view. I believe tactical view might really do it. Usually, I enjoy games where you just jump into action and control every swing and move your character takes. However in Dragon Age they automatically swing and every once in a while on cooldown you can use an ability. It’s somewhat jarring for me to jump in and out of tactical view, but fighting in third person view is silly because you’re not really aiming or anything and you lose information. I much prefer combat ala Fable, but I will keep giving this game more opportunity to impress me because I’ve only heard good things.
